“Life uh… finds a way.” – Jeff Goldblum

2024 has been busy to say in the shortest amount of words. But I want to focus on one aspect of our family for this post. We lost Teddy last year very unexpectedly. We discussed that we would not be getting any new pets until after the new year. Then we would consider maybe another dog…
Come along with us to the first week of January. Our friends had moved from Minnesota to North Carolina. Part of their move was that they would not be taking their dogs with them. We dog-sat for an absolutely beautiful Doberman named Xena for about a week, which is how this story started. Before our friends made the move official they told us that we could keep her saying they were so happy that we showed her so much love and care!
Xena was our New Year pet plan even if we didn’t actually plan it other than we volunteered for dog-sitting. We love having her and spoil her with all sorts of fun treats and adventures! We send photos and updates to her former mom and dad every now and then to show that she still gets all the love.
So there it is, to quote “when one door closes, another door opens” is absolutely true and our hearts are filled with the joy of having another dog.
I will admit that it is strange to feel maybe I should have allowed for more time to grieve Teddy but the truth is that we are pet people. There might not ever be a truly long time that we don’t have a dog and/or a cat or other pet. Life has always found a way to fill our home with wagging tails and pattering of paws along our journey.
Xena is approximately 2.5 years old. She is a large, short-haired dog who is wonderfully loving and cuddly. She is also deaf and we are adapting to speaking to her with sign language. I still sing to her, and we all talk to her even if we forget she cannot hear us. Old habits after all but we add in the signs to show her what we’re saying. She has such a huge sassy personality too. Gets right up in your business but will sit with you with patience that never ends… as long as you give her lots of pets.
